Allied, from director Robert Zemeckis, tells the World War II story of two assassins, Max Vatan (Brad Pitt) and Marianna Beausejour (Marion Cotillard), who fall in love during a mission to kill a German official. They return to war-torn London where Marianne’s identity is called in to question, and Max embarks on a rogue mission to clear her name. In classic Zemeckis style, the film is deliberately paced and uses visual effects to support the story at nearly every step along the way, with 776 of the film’s 954 shots containing VFX.
Production could only build a single airplane for the film: a Westland Lysander. To populate the airfield-based scenes, we scanned our hero Lysander along with a Lancaster bomber from RAF Hendon Airforce Base and dozens of period vehicles and munitions. Purpose-built Katana templates were built to randomize aircraft tail numbers, propellor rotations and other decals at render time.
